Corrosion and electrochemical behavior of light metals

Due to their low density, Al- and Mg-alloys find increasing interest for use in applications, in which weight of the material plays an important role. Alloy development strategies aiming on improved mechanical properties, often lead to a desired heterogeneous, multiphase microstructure of the alloys. In many cases, however, such a surface is especially prone to localized corrosion. Therefore, microstructure/reactivity-relationsships are being studied for modern Al- and Mg-alloys. Further, surface modification techniques to improve the corrosion resistance are investigated.
